When an Uber driver was caught on camera delivering a fatal "roundhouse" kick to Anis Tungekar, a 64-year-old Chicago taxi driver, the victim's family expected justice to be swift. Three months later, they were still waiting for the perpetrator to be charged.
The Chicago Police Department detained the man for questioning, but later released him. No charges were filed at that time. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office declined to file charges related to the September attack, instead asking police to continue the investigation. The family retained attorney held a press conference to place pressure on the State’s Attorney’s Office to bring charges against their father’s attacker. Based on media and public pressure, the State’s Attorney’s Office eventually charged the Uber driver with first-degree murder.
The family intends to file a civil lawsuit against the driver and Uber for his deadly assault on Mr. Tungekar.
