Our client was a west suburban mother whose daughter suffered a severe brain injury during childbirth because her doctors were too aggressive in inducing labor. Our client was a week beyond her due date when labor was induced, and we demonstrated that the injury to her daughter occurred after doctors administered the drug Pitocin too aggressively, causing strong contractions that were too close together. The result was damaged brain tissue from oxygen deprivation, leaving the child with limited speech abilities and emotional control problems. Our lawsuit as originally filed named five doctors, the hospital, and the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, but we reached a $9.75 million settlement with the hospital and the physicians' group that will allow our client to provide her daughter with more therapy, as well as find ways to help her cope with her brain injury.
