Infection Is A Common Cause Of Illness In Hospitals

Contracting an infection after receiving medical treatment in a hospital, outpatient surgery center, clinic or long-term care facility can have a devastating effect on patients and their families, especially if the patient dies from complications such as sepsis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that about 4 percent of hospital patients contract an infection during a stay. That amounts to at least 648,000 patients annually. Studies using other methodologies have placed the number of infections each year at 1.7 million, resulting in more than 200 deaths daily.

These deaths and complications are often preventable, however. Surgeons, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel can be negligent by:

  • Improperly sanitizing their hands before a procedure
  • Misusing antibiotics
  • Exposing patients to contaminated devices such as catheters and ventilators
  • Failing to identify post-operative infections

When infection leads to serious medical complications or death, Wise Law Offices LLC has the experience and knowledge of proper medical procedure to demonstrate that the expected standard of care was violated and that our clients are entitled to compensation for the injury and loss they have suffered. You can rely on our decades of experience in Illinois medical malpractice cases.
